Preparing for a wedding is stressful for everyone involved, but nobody is going to be more stressed than the bride. If your daughter is getting married and feeling overwhelmed, here are three things that you can do to help, as the mother of the bride:
1. Listen
The biggest mistake mothers of the bride make is not pausing to listen to what their daughters want. Of course, you want everything to be perfect for your daughter’s special day, but if you try to take too much control, you will probably end up causing your daughter more stress. Listen to what your daughter needs you to do (if anything), before you step in to help.
2. Do something you’re good at
If the bride tells you she needs help with multiple tasks, and she lists invitations, flower arrangements, and ordering a cake, for example, volunteer to help with the one you feel most comfortable with. Trying to help with flower arrangements when you don’t know anything about flowers is risky, and could potentially end in disaster. But if you know a lot about desserts, offer to help with getting the cake.
3. Give your honest opinion, but only when asked
Every bride is different. Some brides know exactly how they want everything, and some brides need their mother’s opinion (or everyone’s opinion) before they can decide. As the mother of the bride, the most important thing you can do is give your honest opinion, but only when you are asked. If your daughter is in love with a color scheme that you are unsure about, keep your thoughts to yourself, because this is your daughter’s day, and you need to put her happiness first. But if she does ask you what you think, tell her honestly and respectfully.
As a mother of the bride, your responsibility can go far beyond choosing between different mother of the bride dresses. But whatever roll you play in planning the wedding, the most important thing to remember is that you want your daughter to be happy on her special day.
