Hours will be spent pouring over magazine pictures of beautiful gowns for the bride-to-be, appointments will be made at all the fancy boutiques for bridal gown showings, and custom fittings will be done with a seamstress as the big event draws near. But what about mom? It’s a mother’s prerogative to be consumed by anything that’s important to her daughter (such as her wedding gown), but when it comes to such a special day as your daughter’s wedding, don’t forget to take care of yourself! After all, you’ll be in a lot of those pictures too.
Here are a few tips and tricks to find a mother of the bride dress that makes you feel beautiful:
1. Don’t wait until the last minute
To maximize your dress options and increase the likelihood of snagging a good price, make sure you start shopping as soon as possible. If you purchase your gown in advance, remember to schedule a fitting with a seamstress one month out from the big day.
2. Cream is so blasé!
Everyone knows not to wear white to a wedding unless you’re the bride, and there may be some tradition about the mother of the bride being required to wear cream. We think you should wear a color that makes you feel beautiful. Be mindful of the bride’s color choices, and brainstorm with her about colors you look and feel great wearing. Does blue complement your eyes? Does a blush pink give your skin a youthful glow?
3. How dressy?
Momma of the bride should be dressed on the same level of formality as the bride and groom, whether it’s cocktail, dressy-casual or formal. Also, consider the venue. You may not want to wear a floor length ball gown to a beach wedding, when something a little more summery or casual would fit the venue better.
4. You’re a mom, not dead
Sure, keep in mind grandma might appreciate some modesty in your attire, but give yourself permission to wear something that flatters your favorite part of your body. If you’ve been sculpting your arms at the gym, consider a cap sleeve gown that is both modest, but accentuates a part of your body you feel confident about. Do you have impressive calves? Show them off with a flattering heel.
