Grandma’s Gift to the Bride

wedding gift

Is your granddaughter getting married? This must be a very busy – yet exciting – time for you and everyone in your family! If you already have a dress to wear to the wedding and you know if you have a role during the ceremony, the next item on your agenda is the wedding present.

What Present Should Grandma Give?

Some grandmothers are not sure of what wedding present to give their granddaughters. It is true that times have changed and personalities vary, making gift giving (for any occasion, really) a bit of a challenge. Depending on how close your relationship is with your granddaughter, try and give a thoughtful gift. Here are some suggestions for you.

Love, advice, support

Remember that the biggest and best gift a grandmother of the bride can give on the latter’s wedding day is her love and support. Being the oldest female relative, your granddaughter looks up to you for advice and support on love and marriage. Give her this on the days leading up to the big day. If she seeks your advice on wedding planning, wedding etiquette, or even her dress, give it to her. Encourage her on this new path she’s taking and offer pieces of advice on how to make her marriage lasting. Remember to do this softly though as you do not want to add pressure on an already stressful time.

Family Heirlooms

Family heirlooms are great presents at weddings. The sentimental meaning of the gift is something that the bride and groom will cherish forever. This will make for great stories that will be passed on to their children and their children’s children. Consider handing down something that holds special value to you such as a family quilt, a piece of jewelry, china. These are things that your granddaughter will hold dear.

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue

Grandmothers are a great source for the bride’s something old and something borrowed. Offer to give her a piece of your own wedding dress – perhaps your veil, or she might even consider getting your dress redesigned so she can wear it on her big day! You can also give the bride an item that can be worn under her dress such as a vintage handkerchief, a religious item or a hairpin.

Handmade items

You can be more personal with your gift. Something handmade by grandma will make for the perfect wedding present. You can sew or embroider a handkerchief, create a quilt or doilies. If the bride is planning on wearing a handmade wedding dress, you can help create it. This will not only be a lovely wedding present, but a fun memory for both of you. Consider writing a love letter or even a poem for the new couple. You can fill it with messages of love and marriage advice. This is something they will truly cherish and keep with them.

Money

If you have the budget for it, money is a practical gift that you can give the couple. Especially for married couples who are just starting, they will appreciate financial help that they can put into their savings to buy a new house, a new car or perhaps their honeymoon. How much you will give them will be entirely up to you. Consider your budget as well as how your personal relationship with your grandchild.

Whatever gift you decide on, make sure you tell your grandchild (and future grandchild in law) how much you love them and how happy you are to share this day with them.
